All teams will be making their way by one of two buses from Sydney on Cape Breton Island to St John's, New Brunswick. With Steph & Kristen only three minutes behind Jillian & Emmett there's not a lot of time for Jillian to go and buy a new pair of shoes with that whole Loonie on their BMO CashCard. I guess there must be a rule about not going back to find anything you've lost so Wayne had better make a note of that for the future.
Frankie & Amy are out at 9:45pm and will be joined on the second bus by Joel & Ashley who don't leave until 11:40pm. Hopefully the bus departures aren't as far apart as the first and last teams but I'm sure something will even it all out before the end of the episode. At least Jillian didn't have to wait until morning to shop for shoes as someone they talked with actually drove home to pick up a spare pair of sneakers for her. Not the best option but you do what ya gotta do, right?
Once they arrive in St John's, teams need to search downtown to locate their 2016 Chevy Spark and their next clue. Upon arrival Jillian & Emmett run off in one direction while Steph & Kristen run off in the other and are the first to find the cars and the clue. They must now make their way to the City Market and find the Hotels.Com kiosk inside where they will also be given a tablet to assist them in delivering five gift baskets to five different hotels based on the features on the basket's tag which they'll enter into the hotels.com app to locate the correct hotels and addresses. Easy enough, especially if you're not directionally challenged.
Steph & Kristen had no problem finding the market, the kiosk, and figuring out how to use the app. It's basically a big "in game" ad for hotels.com, but I'm okay with that. While the girls get started, Jillian & Emmett have just located the cars and, thanks to the joys of video editing, the second bus has arrived. The last two teams fared a lot better in locating the Sparks while Steph & Kristen dropped off their first basket.
There goes delivery number two for the girls while all the other teams are just starting. Of course in the turmoil of trying to stay ahead, Emmett manages to drop his baskets after delivering their first one which causes Jillian to screech like a harpy and start reprimanding him like he's a little kid. Ashley is having a great time watching them as she and her dad just stay focused and move on.
Joel & Ashley have delivered all their baskets and have also chosen to take on the sticky molasses challenge. That's where we find Steph & Kristen already measuring their ingredients while the Crosby staff look on dubiously. Elsewhere in St. John's, Frankie & Amy are lost trying to deliver their last basket, while Jillian & Emmett have just found their last hotel, but it's on the far side of the freeway and Emmett hasn't a clue how to get over there. Making a run for it is not one of his best decisions and it isn't helped by Jillian whining about her replacement sneakers being two sizes too small. That said, they make the delivery and are still ahead of Frankie & Amy as they head to the molasses.
Steph & Kristen are well underway when Joel & Ashley arrive and Frankie & Amy have finally delivered their last basket. In wanders Jillian & Emmett and the pressure is on. Jillian is sure that Emmett needs to keep stirring, even though nobody else was doing that. While he's stirring, Steph & Kristen are coated in taffy and going through their techniques until they call for a check . . . 651 grams, and their off with their next clue.
It's time for the final Face-Off of the season. Teams will face off against each other on the iconic 12th hole, a Par 3 hole at the Algonquin Golf Course where the team with the lowest number of strokes on the hole will get the next clue and the last team remaining will need to sit out a predetermined penalty. As Steph & Kristen drive away they watch Frankie & Amy arrive and they're surprised that all of the teams chose the molasses challenge rather than the far more intoxicating brewery challenge.
When Frankie & Amy are geared up and ready they start mixing their ingredients but there's a big difference between 4 1/2 Tablespoons and 41/2 Cups of vinegar so they're already off to a horrid tasting taffy. While the mother and daughter destroy a family recipe, Joel & Ashley are moving their taffy to the pan and Emmett is just starting to pour. When Joel calls for a check they have the right weight but the wrong colour so they'll need to knead a little more.
As Joel & Ashley race through the course in their golf cart I love the "bugs bunny" like classical music that Ashley is making. Despite Steph & Kristen hoping that neither of them had ever golfed before, Joel & Ashley managed to beat Steph & Kristen 4-5 and take the lead as they drive themselves to the Kingsbrae Garden to search the parking lot for the next clue, leaving the girls to face off against Jillian & Emmett.
While the girls wait for the exes, Frankie & Amy get an okay on their taffy and I'm hoping that nobody has to actually taste that batch because there's no way that could be good. I'm not even sure it'd be edible. It's a good thing Jillian & Emmett are lousy golfers, going from sand trap to sand trap, because now Steph & Kristen are off to catch up to Joel & Ashley at Kingsbrae Garden.
Speaking of whom, Joel & Ashley have found the Roadblock clue. In this Roadblock, one team member will need to identify 15 plants by their English names using only touch and smell because they'll be blindfolded. On the upside, Ashley gets to help her dad in the practice area to get ready before he goes off on his own for the challenge.
Frankie & Amy finally arrive at the course and make Jillian & Emmett look like Arnold Palmer's kids. Meanwhile, my wife is sitting next to me and laughing that they're even worse than me. I'm not feeling the love. While they keep stroking out, Joel is ready to make his first attempt at the Roadblock as Steph practices. Eventually, back at the golf course, Jillian & Emmett win 6-28 and now Frankie & Amy need to sit out another Face-Off penalty, . . . this time without any beer.
While they wait to move on, Steph & Kristen start to stress at the Roadblock as Jillian & Emmett arrive and Jillian must do this Roadblock. It's not helping her any when Emmett is telling her she needs to memorize the Latin names for the plants rather than the common English names, which he'd know is wrong if only he would . . . Read The Clue!
When Ashley hears them reciting the Latin she tells her dad to keep quiet about it and he quietly agrees. Kristen notices the same problem and also stays quiet. A wise move because Steph got it on her fourth attempt. She whips off her blindfold, grabs the clue and races to Kristen and off to the car. They open their clue and are told to use their OnStar hands free calling to call Jon Montgomery who tells them to find him and the final Pit Stop at St Andrews by the Sea. Off they go.
When Amy makes her first attempt at least the guy tells her she's using the wrong language and that comes from just following another team and not reading the clue. Jillian gets the same information and starts to tear up then yells at Emmett that they're doing it wrong. No surprise there because Emmett didn't read the clue. How often do we have to repeat that? Time to start memorizing the common names.
Steph & Kristen are Team Number 1 and have also won a trip to Sydney, Australia. They want to be the first all female team to win and they just might do it, . . . as long as they remember to read the clue.
Now Amy needs to wrap her head around the English names and while Ashley is sitting beside Frankie she tells her that Steph & Kristen were doing both languages to get it. It's a bit of a lie but whatever works because while she's lead them astray, Joel has completed the Roadblock on his tenth attempt and Joel & Ashley are Team Number 2.
It's down to Jillian or Amy, who now thinks she needs to learn both, but Jillian's fifth attempt is the charm and they're out of there ahead of Frankie & Amy, whose second attempt was close but not close enough. Nor was her third. She knows they're the last team and she's pretty sure they're going to be eliminated.
Jillian & Emmett are Team Number 3 and Jillian is still screaming, but at least they're happy screams for a change. That leaves Frankie & Amy as the last team to arrive and this one is kinda on mom (and maybe a bit on Ashley). However, they ran a good race and made it a lot further than most people felt they would. I'm gonna miss them.
Next week the final three teams are off to Montreal where they'll be tested mentally, physically and emotionally and we'll be right here to let you know who cracks first and who wins The Amazing Race Canada. Of course before that we'll have our exit interview with Frankie & Amy which is sure to be entertaining and our video review of the tenth leg from a brand new location. Until that time.
