It's the day before Episode 2 of Amazing Race Canada airs but here at Gord and Wayne HQ, we're still talking about Episode 1. Last year, we had Cory Mitic from Season 1 talk about Season 2 (thanks Cory, that was awesome!); this year we have Jinder Atwal from Season 2 to talk about Season 3. And Sukhi as well. She wasn't officially supposed to be along for the ride, but since she just walked in from a work out as we called, she decided to join in the fun, even though she was extremely hungry (Thanks Sukhi for being so nice). And I think they subtly threw down a challenge to us during the conversation. But let's get onto it. (Note: Quick transcription so mistakes will exist).
G & W - What did you think of the first episode?
Sukhi - We loved it. We thought it was awesome. The cast was amazing, it was funny. It was interesting to see them because we know what they were going through, the energy coming from them, we loved it.
Jinder - I think Sukhi even cried when the father and daughter (Opi and Simi) had their moment in the water. I looked over and she was tearing up. And at the end, she was so sad that Max and Elias got eliminated. She was going through all the emotions again. It’s funny and different because now we are on the outside, viewing in.
Sukhi - We’re not critically mean people, but it’s hard when people are asking “who’s your favourite team?” and people start bashing them for making a mistake because you don’t really know what it’s like, you’re just on edge. That episode was only an hour on TV but it ws probably a few days in real time. And that’s just full of nerves, sometimes you forget which way is right and you don’t want to make a mistake .
Jinder - Even the most basic things become complicated while on the race.
G & W - So you guys aren’t watching like we do, then? You guys are more sympathetic to the racers?
Sukhi - We’re not watching it like “You suck, you’re terrible.” We’re watching it like “Go, go, go!”
G & W - Did you get flashbacks to the starting line on your season when you saw them line up to start?
Sukhi - Not really. It’s a whole different experience. For me, there was a newness to it, people bringing a different energy to it. Obviously, it’s relatable and we’re excited.
Jinder - Minutes before the episode came on, we were working out, but we couldn’t wait to get to the house so we could watch it because we’re part of a huge Amazing Race Canada family now. And it’s so cool because we know everything that goes into making the show, the producers are incredible, and we know everything that the racers are feeling, so it was great, I don’t know, we were so excited for all the racers and now, just the fact that they get to relive it on TV is cool. And since many of them have been training before they got on the show, they probably know everything about us because we knew everything about the first season cast. So we feel connected to them somehow.
G & W - It’s a shared experience that allows you to relate to other racers.
Sukhi - It’s a community of people who’ve gone through a very unique experience.
Jinder - You can explain to people outside what it’s like, but once you’ve been there and once you’ve raced, it’s different. It’s an unspoken experience, almost a brotherhood.
Sukhi - Imagine racing around the world, freezing your life for 37 days. It’s like being in a big video game, it’s so cool.
G & W - Do you miss it when you watch it, especially since they are going to India?
Sukhi - No. Not really. It would be fun to do an All Star Season, of course, but it stresses me out watching it. I mean I would love to do it again, it was a great experience, but it’s nice to watch. Maybe if it was our entire same cast again, it would be more fun. Because we’re all great friends.
Jinder - We hang out so much. We’re always hanging out with Jackie and Laura, Natalie and Meaghan, staying connected to them all the time. It’s not that we miss it, it’s not that we don’t miss it. (To Sukhi). You know how amazing it would be to be on the race now?
Sukhi - I don’t know about right now… I’d rather watch them.
Jinder - We’d rather watch them struggle going around the world right now.
G & W - You just don't want to do it again, right at this moment?
Jinder - Yeah, that’s right. I mean we would love to do an all-star, if they did one, hands down, in a heartbeat , we would do it again, but not now.
Sukhi - Oh yeah, we would do it again, if they called us.
Jinder - What needs to happen is that you guys, Gord and Wayne need to get on Season 4, get eliminated and then make the All-Stars so we could race each other.
G & W - That would be great, but we don’t want to get eliminated first, or not eliminated at all. If we had to get eliminated, maybe where you guys got eliminated.
Both - Naw, just win it.
G & W - Now you’re talking. I know you guys don’t really want to say you have favourites but you do, don’t you? Come on.
Sukhi - We love Ope and Simi. It’s a story we relate to. The father immigrated here, our father immigrated here. And now they’re Canadian. And she’s so proud of him because he couldn’t swim but he did that task anyway. We also love Sabrina and Nic.
Jinder - We love Sabrina and Nic.
Sukhi - We love the girls (Susan and Sharnjit) from Surrey because we have the connection. And we love brothers (Gino and Jesse) because they are really, really good looking.
Jinder - My sister has a huge crush on them. It’s going to be really interesting when the new episodes come out because there wasn’t much time to get know all of them. We didn’t see the Wrestlers that much but they seem like a coolest guys ever. It’s going to be cool and we’re excited for the next episode and pick some favourites. But we’re so proud of all of them. And we really loved Max and Elias.
Sukhi - They were nice it’s was hard to see them eliminated.
Jinder - That shows that nothing is staged, it just happens and it’s unfortunate. A lot of people ask us if it’s staged but it’s not at all. If you get a get out jail free card with a non-elimination leg, it’s the biggest blessing.
G & W - So what are you guys doing?
Sukhi - I’ve been travelling around the world. I’ve done a couple of Bollywood movies. We’re working on a couple projects right now we can’t talk about. Jinder’s representing as Mr. World Canada. We’re staring a new business and things are good.
Jinder - You guys will be some of the first people to know once we make an announcement about our plans.
G & W - Great, thanks for talking with us. We'll talk next week for Episode 2.
Jinder - We’re so proud of you guys.
G & W - Thanks, we’re just having fun. If we get on the race, we’ll get on the race, if not, we’re still having fun.
Sukhi - That’s awesome.
Jinder - Start training. Everything you do from now on, train. Wear a backpack when you walk around.
G & W - What did you think of the first episode?
