With Brodie & Kurt coming in for their fourth first place finish on the last leg they're also the first ones to get the clue at 12:28 am and are now on their way to Denpasar in Bali, Indonesia. Right on their tail are Burnie & Ashley at 12:30 am who lost another first place finish because of a bad cab and they’re the only team who knows that Brodie & Kurt used their Express Pass. That little bit of information adds a little bit of comfort and could be just what they need to finally get to the top.
Tyler & Korey leave at 1:18 am and right at the back Sherri & Cole leave at 4:11 am but it doesn’t really matter because everyone ends up on the same flight leaving Dubai at 8:50 am which will arrive in Bali at 10:00 pm and there goes Brodie & Kurt's lead. On the other hand it does bring Sherri & Cole back into the pack as this once again levels the playing field.
Everyone arrives in Bali, which looks like a really great place to visit, and races to Tanah Lot, one of the most photographed temples in Bali. Brodie & Kurt managed to catch the first cab out of the airport and somehow Sherri & Cole grabbed the next one and Sherri is just thankful that she’s not driving. On the way to Tanah Lot Burnie & Ashley are discussing their balance on Roadblocks and point out that Kurt has done most of the Roadblocks on the lead team which is going to cause a serious imbalance at the end for Brodie who seems to be Roadblock challenged.
Teams arrive to pick times and Kurt & Brodie grab the first time at 6:15 am with Sherri & Cole right behind them. In the morning they’ll need to find their next clue to perform a Traditional Balinese Offering which they can do two teams at a time. Burnie & Ashley and Tyler & Korey grab the 6:30 am spots which leaves the 6:45 for Zach & Rachel and Dana & Matt, and as per usual Dana is already moaning about being in last place.
All teams will need to deliver two types of offerings, the first is a fruit tower to the monks of Pura Enjung Galuh Temple and their second offering to the other monks at the snake temple of Tanah Lot. Both teams balance the fruit tower on their heads and head off for the temple but when they arrive at Tanah Lot they find out they’ve reversed the temples and that just wasted their lead 15 minute lead. Once again I’d like to point out Rule # 1, Read The Clue!
Sherri & Cole return to the beach to be surrounded by chanting monks while Brodie & Kurt reread the clue again and the next set of teams enter the area. The second set of teams see Sherri & Cole and Tyler asks if this is where they start and for some reason Sherri tells them where to go and what to do and when you’re down to six remaining teams that’s not exactly the best idea.
Whatever, that allowed Brodie & Kurt to find the first temple, which was only about 20 yards from where they picked up the fruit tower and after they delivered the first offering they receive a cute little boa constrictor over their necks which they need to offer to the monks at the temple of Tanah Lot where they first went. Brodie & Kurt are still in the lead but it’s a much smaller lead than they started with as they head off with their snakes.
As Brodie & Kurt walk past Tyler & Korey both of them shriek a little at the thought of having to handle snakes. Time to “man up” boys. They deliver their fruit towers alongside Burnie & Ashley and Sherri & Cole, who have finally figured out where they need to be, and while Sherri is fine with the snakes and tells Cole he’s so lucky to get the white one Korey is starting to stress about the whole idea. At least they managed to power through their fear and not panic, until the snake started nuzzling Tyler’s neck. It’s his Brittney Spears moment in the Balinese sun.
Brodie & Kurt were able to keep ahead of the others but they lost their lead by not doing what? Reading the clue! Maybe they’ll do better on this one as they’re now supposed to find their next clue about a half kilometer past the Bat Temple and off they run. Tyler & Korey are so glad to be rid of those snakes, while Cole seems to actually be enjoying his, but as the three teams all give up their snakes they find themselves right on Brodie and Kurt’s tail.
The final two teams deliver their fruit tower and Zach jumps back when the monk opens the basket to reveal his next offering. Apparently Zach hates snakes but he has no choice but to conquer that fear just like Tyler did, while Dana is telling Matt to hold the snake tight or the snake will suffocate him. Come on now, I think someone would get to the snake long before it suffocated anyone. Rachel seemed to be the only one handling it all nice and calmly, until she finally got the snake off her neck and you could see she was just as afraid as Zach, she was just quiet about it.
Brodie & Kurt pass the Bat Temple and for some reason they, and all the teams behind them, exit their cabs and make a run for it to find their next clue. What would have been wrong with actually staying in the cab the other half a kilometer? The first four teams find the marked sign for the Natural Salt Maker and their next clue. Roadblock; Salt Of The Earth in which teams must first collect sea water and then pour it on to beds of black volcanic sand so the water can evaporate, . . . they will then need to make their way to the hollowed coconut trees where the salt brine has been brought to crystallize and scrape out enough salt to fill four bags to receive their next clue.
Once again Kurt steps up to do the Roadblock because Brodie doesn’t feel too confident about it and I’m thinking that that’s not their best plan. Right behind Kurt, Burnie decides to do it and then so does Tyler. Meanwhile, before they can decide who is doing the Roadblock, Sherri & Cole need to find the Meals on Wheels guy to perform their Speed Bump. They need to prepare and sell ten breakfasts and then eat one themselves before they can continue racing.
While Sherri & Cole search for the guy on the motorbike Burnie picks a plot of sand close to the water and watches the example being set by the guy with the two containers yoked over his shoulders. Korey has figured out that there’s a lot of manual labour on this one and he’s a little concerned about Tyler doing it, especially when they watch the little Balinese guy with his full containers while everyone else is struggling just to get water in theirs. Once they figure it out it’s an easy enough task, just a lot of work and really wet.
Sherri & Cole find their guy and he shows them how to make the breakfasts and then they start to create their first meals and Cole is thinking it’s more like a dinner with all the noodles and meatballs and broth but it’s easy to recreate. The first meals made they head out to sell them and then it’s back to the mobile kitchen to make more. Create, sell, repeat.
Back on the beach the first three teams are finding their rhythm and Brodie is aware that Kurt is the stronger competitor of the two of them and he’s crushing this task. Brodie keeps cheering him on like a good teammate. I’d do the same for Wayne. When Zach & Rachelarrive Rachel decides she can do it and when the others realize that you can almost tell there’s a bit of relief amongst them because it’s going to be tough on Rachel and that gives the other teams some breathing room. Too bad they can’t switch tasks once they realized what the task actually entailed.
Sherri & Cole have completed their ten breakfasts and then sit down to eat one themselves but they find the food way too spicy. While Cole is trying to fan down his mouth the locals are having a blast laughing at him. This would be a great breakfast as far as I’m concerned but then again I love spicy foods. At least they managed to keep it down even when Cole started calling it goat testicle soup. That was a pretty easy speed bump and now they can get back into the race.
Rachel was not the best choice for this task as she’s only able to carry about a quarter of what all the others were carrying to salt the sand and that’s definitely going to slow them down on this one. She has little to no upper body strength while Burnie has more than enough to call over a judge to decide if he’d salted enough of that sand and he gets the thumbs up. He’s drenched but he’s done and he’s now moving on to the brine trough. Kurt calls for judgement next and he’s moving in right behind Burnie.
I like the little shot that Burnie takes at Kurt when he mentions that he traditionally doesn’t do that well, then mentions that Kurt has about half of the first place finishes in the race. The two of them chuckle about that while back on the beach Sherri & Cole have arrived just ahead of Dana & Matt. Cole decides he’s doing this one and Zach is just hoping that Dana decides to do it but his hopes are for naught as Matt takes on the task.
When Sherri sees that Rachel is the only girl out there she shouts encouragement to Rachel, which is more than Zach has been doing. While Rachel just keeps at it, Burnie and Kurt are watching how to fill and tie their salt bags and Burnie hollers over to Ashley that she’s going to get a big salty kiss after this, which prompts Kurt to tell Brodie that he’s going to get . . . nothing. Aww, c'mon. Brodie deserves something for staying out of the way doesn’t he?
Cole is killin' this task while Rachel keeps losing her load as she walks out of the sea, . . . and Cole is done in no time. Yep, having Rachel do this task was a huge mistake for her and Zach. Sherri & Cole have managed to move ahead despite their Speed Bump and then Matt gets the okay to move on as Rachel drops her yoke and all anyone can do is look on and hope for the best.
Burnie & Ashley move into first place and Burnie & Ashley are now on their way to Pantai Mertasari to find their next clue. As they race out Cole compares the whole scraping salt routine to working at an ice cream parlour back home in Alabama called Milky Moos, which sounds kinda disgusting when you think about it, but whatever helps him get through the task. When Kurt presents his four bags for approval he’s told he needs to top one up but then Kurt dumps a bag and that’s definitely going to set them back a bit, allowing Tyler & Korey to move ahead of them into second place.
Back on the sand Zach points out that this is probably the hardest thing that Rachel has ever done in her life, and definitely would have been the hardest thing he’d ever done had he done it. Rachel feels she’s finally done and calls for a check, and she gets the thumbs up and she can now head over to scrape salt from the trough, which is where we find Kurt presenting his bags again when one comes untied. Damn he’s not having any luck today.
Speaking of luck, this may be their day as Burnie & Ashley find the next clue expecting a Detour only to discover another Roadblock. This Roadblock ties in to the Bali Kite Festival which has kites that are 36 feet wide and 1,000 feet long. That’s a lot of kite. The team member who didn’t salt the sand will have to build one of these kites with a team of kite enthusiasts and if they can get it airborne they’ll receive their next clue. Guess this is Burnie’s one chance to tell Ashley to Go Fly A Kite.
Burnie & Ashley are feeling like this is their leg, especially now that Brodie has to do this side of the Roadblock, as well as all future Roadblocks because Kurt has done too many. While Ashley examines what she needs to do to build her kite, Tyler & Korey arrive and Korey hits the sand. There’s not really a lot of direction from those kite enthusiasts and that may allow the other teams to catch up, right after the figure out how to tie those bags of salt properly. When Zach asks Brodie why they don’t just use the Express Pass Brodie goes silent and everyone exchanges a bit of a confused look as Kurt finally gets approval for his salt bags and they move into third.
While the final three teams work on timing their salt bags, Ashley is almost done her kite as Korey catches up. Burnie and Tyler are fairly happy that they haven’t seen any other teams yet but it’s only a matter of time. If Wayne salted the sand, building the kite would have fallen to me and since I’m a little more detail oriented that would have worked out fine, but you never know who’s going to get what task when you’re actually in the race.
Back at the trough Cole completes his salt bags, then Matt completes his, and as the two teams head out Matt hollers back encouragement to Rachel as they leave on her own to finish up. Fortunately she made up a lot of time on the scraping side of this task so she’s not too far behind. Zach keeps hollering encouragement as she starts timing her bags of salt.
Ashley and Korey are both moving along on their kites as Brodie & Kurt arrive and Brodie finds out he’s out of options because Kurt can’t do any more Roadblocks. Brodie gets started on his kite but he looks pretty confused when he finds out there are no actual directions to follow. Like me, he’s wondering why those kite enthusiasts aren’t helping him because he thought they were building it together. No such luck on that one.
Rachel gets the okay on her salt bags and completes the first Roadblock and as they head off to join the others we find Brodie trying to get some hint as to how to start his kite by checking out what Ashley is doing. Ashley thought that was a bit flattering that Brodie would try to cheat off of her. He’s like a fish out of water on this one, which is what everyone expects will happen to Sherri when she gets started on her kite.
AS Sherri and Dana both check out what they’re supposed to do, Ashley has attached the head of her kite and Kotrey is just getting started on that himself. They’re really close, maybe even too close, but that’s not a problem for Dana who is going on about not having a clue and not being a builder and . . . she really complains a lot. Matt must be some kind of saint to have so much patience. Brodie finally figures out that the parts are labelled.
As Ashley attaches her tail Zach & Rachel have arrived and Zach is looking forward to this task as he just flies through it. Both Korey and Ashley are ready to fly their kites and Korey has managed to get into place just ahead of Ashley and starts running down the beach. That is one huge kite and that tail just keeps unfurling behind it which puts Tyler & Korey into the lead as they receive their next clue.
Korey & Tyler are off to Semawang Beach to take an outrigger canoe to the next pit stop on the Phinisi, a traditional Indonesian sailboat. As Tyler & Korey head out, Ashley gets her kite into the air and Burnie & Ashley will be just moments behind them. Tyler finally comes to the realization that Brodie & Kurt may have already used their Express Pass and Korey doesn’t think that was a good plan on their part. That said, it’s great news for him and Tyler because there’ll be no surprise of finding Brodie & Kurt ahead of them at the outrigger canoes.
While Tyler & Korey board their outrigger and Burnie & Ashley exit their cab, both Sherri and Dana have moved past Brodie on their kites and Sherri & Cole move into third with Dana & Matt moving into fourth leaving Brodie behind when he finds out he has screwed up his kite and may be joining his crush Blair outside the game sooner than he had hoped. That’s good news for Zach who’s almost done building his kite.
While Brodie and Zach race against each other to finish first, Burnie & Ashley are catching up in their outrigger but Tyler & Korey are Team Number 1 and have also won $5,000 each, while Burnie & Ashley are Team Number 2, a position they must be tired of getting used to.
Back on the beach Brodie's kite is in the air and it's followed into the blue yonder by Zach’s kite which means it's going to be a paddle to the Pit Stop and I'm thinking that Kurt & Brodie are likely to outmuscle Zach & Rachel on that one. As they race to the outriggers, Sherri & Cole made up a lot of time on this leg thanks to that single flight out of Dubai and they are Team Number 3, while Dana & Matt are Team Number 4.
In a race across the sea Brodie & Kurt are Team Number 5, despite all their arguing during their paddling, and Zach & Rachel are the last team to arrive and have been eliminated, pirate style, from the race. Zach & Rachel get to walk the plank and as they're devoured by the creatures of the deep we fade to credits until next week.
That was a great episode with a lot of back and forth for the lead position but next week the teams are off to juggle chickens, coconuts, and a Double U-Turn while conquering their fear of heights. I’ll be right here to let everyone know how it all plays out, after my other reviews of what’s going on inside the Big Brother house and out on the island. Until that time.
