Having come in first, Hayley & Blair are out at 12:35am and leaving Monte-Carlo, Monaco on their way to Namibia, Africa, 10 hours away. When they arrive they need to sign up for another flight to their next clue. Aly & Steve are close behind at 12:41am with Mike & Rochelle leaving at 12:45 and Matt & Ashley are out at12:5 with Jelani & Jenny right behind and Laura & Tyler are finally out at 12:58 am. They all get to sleep in the floor in the airport to await their morning flight.
Everyone is on the same flight to Namibia and upon arrival race into the airport to grab their next flight. Somehow Hayley & Blair ended up in the last bush flight and they're a little miffed. Steve & Aly managed to catch the first flight. Everyone else is shuffled about in the middle and all teams are flying pretty close together over the African plain.
They now need to drive themselves in a 4x4 to the Bushmen Village, and along the way they need to pick up a salt lick. None of them have a clue what a salt lick is but Aly found the sign, as did Jenny and then Laura.
Aly & Steve are the first to the San Village Roadblock and Aly gets the clue to help the bushmen build a grass hut. Jelani also chooses to do the task, followed by Matt.
Mike & Rochelle arrive in their bush plane, get in their 4x4 and can't figure out how to start it. Does he really run a truck stop? Are we sure he's not just the bus boy. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Hayley & Blair arrive, race to the last vehicle and have no such problems as they pull away, leaving Mike & Rochelle in the dust. Rochelle finally takes over and uses the right key to start the truck before letting Mike take over the driving again. I think she's forgotten how easily he gets lost.
Hayley & Blair arrive at the village but realize they haven't grabbed a salt lick so they head back. Laura & Tyler realize they don't have the salt lick either and race back to grab one. When Mike & Rochelle arrive Rochelle chooses to build the grass hut.
Meanwhile, Hayley plays with the kids while Blair builds the hut. It's a good fit for her and she seems to be enjoying herself. Blair's enjoying the peace and quiet as he just keeps building.
Tyler races through the hut building, a skill Laura wasn't aware he had, and Laura & Tyler move into first place after completing their grass hut but it's not much of a lead as everyone else finishes right behind them. Teams now to drive to the Rangers Headquarters, deliver their salt lick and receive their next clue. They're all on their way to the . . . Detour: Track or Pack.
In Track teams get to act like game wardens as they attempt to locate an elephant. I've always loved elephants and this would be an awesome task but it could take awhile. In Pack teams get to help the wild painted dogs (they look like hyenas to me and everyone else) by feeding them wildebeest meat. They have to carve the meat off the carcass to fill a bucket and then get it to the hyenas. It's a messier task, but probably a lot quicker than hunting for Dumbo.
Laura & Tyler, Matt & Ashley and Jelani & Jenny all decide to do Pack. I don't think they expected the carving part of the task, especially those who don't eat meat. Then again, "meat smells like money" according to either Ashley or Jenny. Laura almost gags slicing up the meat into smaller chunks but she gets through it.
Steve and Aly have run out of options when all the Pack slots are filled and they are forced to do Track. They're given a quick lesson in how to use the antenna and told to keep the volume up and then they're off in search of their pachyderm.
Meanwhile, Mike & Rochelle and Hayley & Blair are still building their grass huts and Hayley is being really supportive of Blair, which is kinda weird. Blair finishes before Mike and they're off to the detour with their salt lick. Hayley & Blair also have no choice but to do Track. Mike & Rochelle finally finish their hut shortly thereafter and the tribe sings them on their way to the Detour.
Steve and Aly are driving along looking and enjoying all the wildlife that Africa has to offer. Hayley gets a little sidetracked with nothing to do but watch the animals as Blair manages the antenna and the receiver. That's right Hayley, a gazelle is not an elephant. Keep looking. Aly is too easily distracted by the zebras and smacks Steve with the antenna. She could put an eye out with that.
Back in search of the Pack, Matt & Ashley, Laura & Tyler and Jelani and Jenny find the wild dogs and it's feeding time. Matt asks what would happen if they got out of the truck and the game warden tells him the dogs would eat him up. I guess he won't be getting out of the truck. Good thing he asked.
Now that the dogs are fed they get their next clue and are on their way to the Spitzkoppe, an ancient landmark and the Pit Stop for this leg of the race. Time to move into high gear, but it's apparently over a 200 km drive so anything could happen.
Mike & Rochelle have arrived at the Detour and get to do Pack now that the other teams have moved on. What's with all the vegetarians this season? We have incisors for a reason girls. While they're slicing meat Matt & Ashley, Laura & Tyler and Jelani & Jenny are all on their way to the Pit Stop.
Steve & Aly finally find an elephant and are now also on their way with Hayley & Blair close behind them after finding their elephant. I think it may even have been the same elephant. That or the elephants are in the same area (or they edited in the same footage).
When Laura & Tyler stop to check their map Matt & Ashley notice them in the rear view mirror and think they've missed something. They stop further up the road and start looking around. Matt even gets out of the truck in case he's missed something along the roadside. Jelani & Jenny stop behind Laura & Tyler wondering what the heck is going on.
While driving along the extremely bad roads, Steve & Aly end up getting a flat when Steve is too far to the left and while he begins changing the tire they're passed by Hayley & Blair. Aly says she saw it coming and just keeps going on and on about it. That's not helping Aly. Why doesn't she know how to change a tire? That's almost as bad as not knowing how to drive a stick.
Matt & Ashley stop to ask for directions from a local and Laura & Tyler take that as their chance to drive past and pull ahead. That could be a great game move if they know where they're going but if they don't that could be a really bad decision.
Somewhere in the back of the pack Mike once again proves to be directionally challenged and I think they've gotten lost again. Steve certainly hopes so because he's still changing a flat somewhere on the road.
Laura & Tyler are now directly ahead of Matt & Ashley as they near the Pit Stop and it's gonna be a foot race. They can both see Phil standing in the distance and race out of their trucks. Somehow I don't think climbing the cliff is the easiest way to get there but it worked . . . Matt & Ashley are Team Number 1 and have also won $5000 each. Laura & Tyler are right behind them and are Team Number 2.
Apparently Jelani & Jenny overshot the turn to the Spitzkoppe, allowing Hayley & Blair to arrive at the Pit Stop ahead of them and become Team Number 3. Jelani & Jenny think they may be last because of having to backtrack but they are Team Number 4. Mike & Rochelle have been in the back most of this leg but somehow have managed to arrive as Team Number 5. That leaves Steve & Aly as the last team to arrive and Aly can't believe he's so calm about it but, as many people expected, they're still in it because this was a non-elimination leg.
Everyone will be sleeping in tents in the shadow of the Spitzkoppe and the teams get a moment to just relax and hang out. That'd be a pretty awesome place to camp, even with all the bugs and wild animals. I don't think production is going to let anyone get eaten by wild dogs.
Morning comes early and Matt & Ashley are the first out at 6:47am with Laura & Tyler right behind them and the teams are now driven out of the backcountry to the German town of Swakopmund where they need to find a bookstore and grab a local German paper for their next clue Hayley & Blair aren't too far behind at 7:08, Jelani & Jenny are out at 7:38, Mike & Rochelle leave at 7:54 and Steve & Aly are the last out at 8:12.
Everyone grabs the paper and finds the clue but they all need it translated. They all need to drive 6.8 kms to a skydiving area for this leg's . . . Roadblock; it's time for an airdrop when they're asked who likes skydiving. From 1000 feet in the air the travelocity gnome will direct an air drop of a yellow case and the team member needs to track the case, retrieve it, and return it after grabbing the gnome on the ground. Everyone thought they were going skydiving, only to find themselves running around in the desert. This would have been Wayne's task because he would have jumped at the chance to throw himself out of a perfectly good plane.
It's Jelani & Jenny's turn to get a flat tire when they drive over a nail and that's going to delay them a bit. They haven't a clue how to change the tire but luckily enough they found someone in town to fix it. Again I ask, why don't they know how to change a tire?
Hayley thought she found the case but she was wrong. Laura found her case and grabbed her gnome, as did Ashley and they're off again. Hayley finally finds her case and grabs her gnome and now she and Blair are moving on. They pass Mike & Rochelle who are just arriving as they leave.
Jelani & Jenny also arrive and it's Mike and Jelani who think they're skydiving. They're not. Mike gets lost in the desert (again) as Jelani races straight for his case, then Mike grabs his. They're pretty close at this point but Jelani is in better shape and Mike is slowing down in the heat.
Steve & Aly hit their SpeedBump, they need to make a toy airplane out of a repurposed Coke can. Good thing the kids are there to help. It's an easy enough Speed Bump, but it does take a little time. Nothing like origami with river reeds though.
Matt & Ashley are first to the Detour; Work or Play. In Work, teams get to smooth out five miles of rough Namibian road by hooking five huge tires together and dragging them behind a vehicle. In Play, teams get to do some cross country sand skiing on the dunes after getting a quick lesson by a professional instructor . . . I'm thinking this would be the way to go and so do Matt & Ashley who are big time snowboarders. Unfortunately they're not big time sand dune climbers. Laura & Tyler decide to do Work instead, but I'm not sure why they want to drag the tires instead of roll them.
Mike finally gets back with his case and gnome and Rochelle feels it may be time to take the next step in their relationship when they get home. Finally, says Mike. They're a weak team, but they're likeable. Hopefully they're not going home too soon.
With their Speed Bump out of the way Steve runs out to find the case, but Aly thinks he's running the wrong way. Since it's not where he thinks it should be, he probably is. Steve finally checks his compass but to no avail because he looked away from his compass when the case fell and he's not sure what it read when the case landed.
Jenny & Jelani are thinking of using their Express Pass, while Hayley & Blair hook up their tires and Ashley gets stuck in a sand dune. Steve changes direction and lo and behold finds the case, grabs the gnome and heads back.
Over at Work, Laura & Tyler are heading back towards Hayley & Blair on the return trip with their tires and Tyler thinks he should play a little game of chicken. Apparently it's hard not to complete this side of the Detour correctly because we don't see anyone having to redo it.
Matt & Ashley were ready to ski down the dune only to find they get to slide down and get their next clue, and a little sand in their teeth. They're the first to make their way down the road to the U-Turn. They need to get there before Jelani & Jenny who have decided to use the Express Pass and are also on their way to the U-Turn. Editing makes it look like a footrace but it's probably not.
Matt & Ashley get there first and, as decided earlier, U-Turn Jelani & Jenny. When Laura & Tyler arrive shortly after they decide to U-Turn Steve & Aly. That's not going to help the Olympians. Teams now get to drive themselves into the heart of the desert to this leg's pit stop, Goanikontes Oasis Rest Stop where they can deliver their gnome along with their choice of African wildlife, either a donkey, a zebra, a camel, or an oryx gazelle.
Jelani & Jenny arrive at the U-Turn to find themselves u-turned and are now forced to do the Work Detour where they meet up with Mike & Rochelle.
Laura and Tyler choose a zebra before heading to the mat. Matt & Ashley almost forgot their gnome when they went to grab their gazelle. Laura & Tyler are Team Number 1 and also win a trip to Queenstown, New Zealand. Matt & Ashley are Team Number 2 and Hayley & Blair walk up with their camel to be Team Number 3.
Mike & Rochelle manage to complete the Detour just ahead of Jelani & Jenny. When Steve & Aly arrive they choose Play. No surprise there. It's a quick edit showing them make it to the top and a faster slide down. Uneventful and a little foreboding.
Mike & Rochelle take a zebra, while Jelani & Jenny take a camel. Mike lets his zebra get away from him a few times so they decide to switch to a donkey. Jelani & Jenny are Team Number 4 and Mike & Rochelle are Team Number 5.
Steve & Aly arrive at the U-Turn to find they now need to do the other side of the Detour, which I don't think they even showed. After that they walk a camel to the mat and Steve & Aly are the last team to arrive and they have been eliminated from the race. They know they pretty much took themselves out of the race these last two legs but it's still hard to walk away . . . even if they are leaving with their camel.
There's only five teams left as we head into next week where the teams find themselves hot tubbing through Amsterdam when they're not biking through the streets. I love going to Amsterdam. Great food, great people and a burger joint to die for. Not sure why everyone piles into the McDonald's across from the Burger Bar. All they need to do is turn around for a much better burger.
That's it for tonight. Be sure and catch up on what's happening in the Big Brother Canada house with my review on Sunday, and my Survivor review next Wednesday before the teams are on their way to Amsterdam next Friday. Until that time.
