As the show notes, in his season, which he came in second, Shelby couldn't even ride a bike. But even though his brother thinks he stills sucks behind the wheel, he's gotten better. Michael is the only driver close to him, so maybe if Michael does things right, he might go home. But I'm saying Shelby.
The first challenge is to have the drivers reverse a limo in a figure 8 course. Looks like fun, wonder if host Andrew Younghusband will be in the back. Unlike other times, Andrew does his version of the challenge in front of all the drivers and their partners. That way, they won't feel intimidated. The course is pretty wide so it should be okay for the rest of us normal drivers. Andrew makes it look easy, getting done in just over 4 minutes.
Angelina volunteers to go first. And for laughs, the other drivers get in the back. I think for once they should have the expert panel in the back. Angelina goes straight back and hits a barrier in the first five seconds. And she continues to hit things, front and back. And then her boyfriend calls so she starts talking while still driving. This is way too easy so I'll do another prediction: unless something seriously changes, Angelina will be named Canada's Worst Driver Ever. Even the other bad driver think she's the worst.
Michael is next and as I said, if he does well, he could go home this week. But he hits a few bits of stuff. He also has to stop and reposition 12 times. But overall, only 5 hits. Kevin jumps in without adjusting his mirrors. But we forget what he's doing because Angelina looks at Shelby and asks him if he knows what happens in the back of limos. Naively, Shelby says, "normally people go to grads and they have chaperones and their dates." But she points at the mirror on the ceiling. Not sure if Shelby gets it, but the whole scene was pretty funny.
Meanwhile, Kevin is okay on his driver's mirror but not on his passenger. Even though Andrew makes a negative comment about him, he actually only hit two things, three less than Michael. The show does this all the time, making one driver look better through comments because they want to send this person home. Dale is next but she hits a bunch of stuff. Andrew is actually helping her too much, as the experts say, but she still doesn't do well. She hits 22 things.
Shelby starts badly, like Angelina, he just goes straight. Andrew gets so frustrated that he tells the viewer to call their MP, MLA, whatever in order to get tougher rules on who gets a driver license. Maybe I'm gonna be wrong because Shelby hits 16 things. But he sucks at reversing. But expert Philippe says Sly is the worse reverse they've ever had on the show. And Philippe is right. He's so slow that the sun is setting, and everybody leaves the back seat.. Even Fred, his brother-in-law, leaves. Sly gets 34 hits.
After the commercial break, the bit with Andrew being a baby is silly. I'm thinking this show is done after this season cause the jokes and the bits are getting very stale. Next challenge is swerve and avoid. Drive down a straightaway at 70 kph. At a point, a foam car will pop out on one side and the drivers must swerve and avoid the car but going the other way. Andrew does it but just barely. He looks like he had a heart attack after wards. So this isn't that easy to do.
Kevin jumps behind the wheel of the Camaro, hits the correct speed. But he hits the brakes and nails the side of the barrier. On Kevin second's chance, he does the same thing but on the other side. Shelby hits 100 kph and hits the side but he was slightly better than Kevin. Second time, Shelby makes it, correctly predicting he will not be Canada's Worst Driver Ever. But will he go home today?
Dale doesn't even wait for the car to come out. She picks a side and nails the foam car as it pops out. She actually does the second one pretty well but the experts think she just made a lucky guess. Hard to tell but regardless, she passes, probably one of the few times this has happened. When Sly goes, they do an experiment. They ask him to only go 40k kph and will not have the foam car appear. But even without the car, he just driver right into the wall without turning, without braking. This tells me, and the experts, that there is something not connecting in Sly's brain. He didn't even try to safe himself and miss the wall. "It's little things like that, that makes me wonder if I should drive," Sly says.
When Sly does the real challenge, he speeds and turns right into the foam car. Fred tells him that it was this specific challenge that made him bring Sly back to the show. He wants to show his brother-in-law how bad he is. Will Sly stop driving? Doubt it. Michael goes but with his partner Yolanda. She's still afraid. So Andrew takes her place. Yolanda has every reason to be afraid but Michael steers right into the foam car. Second time around, he turns toward the foam car but saves himself in time. He's disappointed in himself. And even though he didn't hit anything, it's a fail.
Angelina is hungover again. Shyamala feels sorry for Angelina, says the girl needs help and they should do everything to make sure she does get that help. I agree. She freaks out and hits the wall without barely steering. She nails the straightaway, makes it through the safe side but then hits a bunch of foam bricks and the grass afterwards. She thinks it was a success, but nope.
And then it's my fav challenge: the water challenge. Drivers must navigate a course with a large container of water over the car. Any mistakes and the water will fall through the open roof onto the occupants. Another lame scene with Andrew describing the challenge while underwater. Yep, this show is dead. At least to me. After this season, I'm done watching. Andrew goes and there is probably a poll between the production staff on how much water he'll spill (or not) this year. He starts well but spills when he has to brake. He spills a bit more, losing only 16 litres of water. But just for fun, he brakes really hard at the end to spill a bunch more.
Sly (and Fred) get wet almost instantly. And he bangs through steering area, although not spilling any water. More water spills at other points and he hits 65 litres of water. Dale starts but stops because she has to set her mirrors. She loses 55 litres. Michael gets wet, knocks over rims, gets wet and loses 50 litres. Not the worse but still bad. Kevin stops suddenly a bunch of times and loses 80 litres. Shelby is next, barely gets wet until he backs into a foam person. Then he drives over the body. Water rushes over, breaking the water tank. All the water flows over him. Darn, gotta stop predicting stuff.
Angelina is supposed to go next but she's having a therapy session. And Shyamala suggests that maybe the show may not be a great place for this mixed up girl. But Angelina says she has to finish, to see this experience through. But we don't to see her attempt. And quite frankly, the water challenge is a bust. It was way too short of a section, especially considering that this is not only my fav challenge but everyone else's. Not good editing if you're shortening everyone's fav challenge.
At the assessment, Dale admits that she did actually guess on her swerve and avoid. So it's a fail. She believes she saw the car. So Shyamala asks her if this happens often. Dale says no but also suggests she shouldn't graduate. No one thinks they should graduate. And only Shelby is on the shortlist, even though he only passed one challenge. But will they let him? Nope. But only because he said he shouldn't. Bit of a cop out for me; they should have said he failed too many challenges instead of pointing to what he said at the assessment. I mean, they penalize folks for being too confident, folks who say they deserve to go home. But when a guy's honest, they penalize him. Next Shelby, for sure.
