As to the question on who will win Season 5 of Amazing Race Canada we have a tie. Battling for first to arrive on the mat are Sam/Paul and Kenneth/Ryan. Not surprising that two all male teams are at the top since three out of four winners of TAR Canada have been all-male teams. But remember last season when many were picking Anthony and Brandon but they were out in the first leg? That's what you get for quitting a task after another teams quits the same one. Same had to do with Max and Elias who were early fan favs but also hit a tough challenge with the sports reading.
Leading the way into team to be eliminated first is Korey/Ivana. A bit of a surprise because these guys look physically tough. But maybe some folks think they'll need more than their physical attributes. Racers need more than just physicality to succeed; there's a mental toughness necessary to survive. A toughness I'm not sure many of these young teams may not have, but then again, I should be ageist. Who knows how these teams will work out during the race? I hope I'm surprised.
And it seems that's the attitude of the fans of Gord and Wayne HQ. When asked what people thought of the cast so far, the number one answer is that they'll wait to see how the teams do on the show before they decide. Classic Canadian answer but that's where I stand as well. It's hard to judge a team through just their bios, although we can't help making assumptions cause we're humans. Interesting to note the we only got one vote for this season having the best cast ever, the lowest of the choices. Even Meh! beat the best cast ever. Though we got some decent votes for this being a solid cast.
So many fans have already chosen their favourites. My fav teams so far are Aaron/Deb because of their sense of humour plus Karen/Bert cause they're from my hometown of Edmonton. Whether one of make it all the way is another. Let's just say none of my fav teams have actually won the race, at least technically. That's another story about how teams can win without actually wining the race. Based on our survey, the fav favourite team is another tie between Sam/Paul and Andrea/Adam.
Now onto the most important part of the survey. We here at Gord and Wayne HQ wanted to know if folks wanted us on the show. Although this is not a scientific survey, the choice of 'Gord and Wayne are awesome, I would start a petition to get them cast! was the number 1 choice. By a long shot. I'm a bit humbled because we gave our fans plenty of chances to take shots at us. And they've done that before many times. That said we got a few votes of Who's Gord and Wayne, which is confusing because it's our survey, and a few for Gord and Wayne are too old, although that was the bottom choice of all the choices. I wonder if those votes came from the CTV/BellMedia marketing department. It's not secret that there was pressure on race producers to have a younger cast in order to attract the important demographic millennials. And odd choice since millennials don't have TV and live in a gig economy. They also don't buy cars, heck they don't even drive anymore because of Uber and other car-sharing type things. They also don't shop at Canadian Tire. Holy shit, I live in a gig economy, use Uber and other car-sharing things and don't really shop at Canadian. Does that mean I'm a millennial?
I should note that the Number 2 answer in this part of the survey was a call for an All-Star Season. There's been talk of one for a couple of years. Some speculated the reason the casting for Season 4 opened late last year was due to the researching of an All-Star Season but they were unable to get enough teams interested or able to go. All Star Seasons can work, one of the best seasons in TAR: US history was the first all-star season. But that was after 10 seasons of the show. It would be very tough for TAR Canada to find enough teams to make a worthwhile all-star season. First off, there are a good number of teams who will not or cannot go back to the race due to various reasons: politics, career, desire, ability, etc. Then there are five winning teams which should not be asked back no matter how interesting they are. And then there are other teams who just weren't interesting enough in the first place and shouldn't be asked back. And the ones who may be interesting but they still have the same story and to rehash that story again just doesn't make good TV. So, I'm not behind the All-Star Season idea for TAR Canada.
That's it for the survey results. Leave a comment below if you wish and I'll see you all at the starting line on July 4.
